A preliminary investigation of age and growth of Otolithes ruber from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa OceanDocs

This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. Age et croissance de <Pagrus caeruleostictus> (Valenciennes,1830) des côtes de Nouakchott OceanDocs

L’étude de la croissance de Pagrus caeruleostictus des côtes de Nouakchott (Mauritanie) a été réalisée par scalimétrie. L’analyse des variations mensuelles de l’allongement marginal (A.M.) a permis de montrer que la période d’apparition des anneaux d’arrêt de croissance est située en février. Par rétro-calcul, nous avons déterminé la longueur à la fourche (LF) à l’apparition de chaque anneau d’arrêt de croissance en utilisant la relation liant la longueur du poisson au rayon de l’écaille. L’application du modèle de Von Bertalanffy sur ces longueurs, a permis d’obtenir les paramètres de la croissance moyenne en longueur et en masse de l’espèce pour les 2 sexes pris séparément. Age et croîssance du chinchard à quelque jaune (trachurus méditerraneus) dans la région nord de la Tunisie OceanDocs

Le chinchard à queue jaune est un Carangidae qui fait l’objet d’une exploitation par les différents types de pêche le long des côtes tunisiennes. Dans le présent travail on se propose d’étudier l’âge et la croissance sur la base de la distribution des fréquences de taille dans la région Nord de la Tunisie. La décomposition de ces fréquences de taille est réalisée suivant la méthode de Battacharya (1967). Deux périodes sont considérées, la première correspond à l’année 1998 et la seconde s’étale entre Novembre -1999 et Décembre -2000. Pour la première période, 6 classes d’âges ont pu être identifiées alors que pour la seconde cette valeur est de 7. Les équations de croissance linéaire annuelle suivant le modèle Von Bertalanffy (1938) ont été établies.

Reproduction, age, growth, feeding habits and population dynamics of four large temperate sharks (sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus, school shark Galeorhinus galeus, copper shark Carcharhinus brachyurus, and broadnose sevengill shark Notorynchus cepedianus) were studied in Anegada Bay (between 39°50' and 40°40'S), Argentina. Data were gathered from 1089 individuals examined during a three-year study period. Age and growth were studied through examination of vertebral centra only in the first three species. Population dynamics was modeled through stage matrix population models. Most sand tiger sharks examined were adults and evidence indicates that they use the study area as a mating ground. Edad, crecimiento y mortalidad de Lutjanus purpureus Poey, 1867 (Pisces: Lutjanidae) de la region de Guyanas OceanDocs

Se determinó la edad y se estimaron los parámetros de crecimiento y mortalidad del pargo colorado, Lutjanus purpureus Poey, 1867 con base en la lectura de 152 urohiales de 1561 individuos capturados durante 1988 de la región de Guayanas, comprendida entre los 06º - 10º LN y 54º - 61º LW, mediante la pesca exploratoria del B/I "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen". El recuento de zonas anuales en urohiales permitió establecer siete grupos de edad. La curva teórica de crecimiento en longitud se ajustó de acuerdo con los valores de los parámetros de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy : L∞ = 91.99 cm; K = 0.245 por año; to = -0.499 año. This paper deals with the age and growth parameters of the Southwest Atlantic beaked skate Dipturus chilensis, as well as with some reproductive features of the species. Samples of individuals inhabiting 34°-55°S and 52°- 69°W were analyzed. They were taken during surveys carried out by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) research vessels, as well as by a landing sampling at Mar del Plata port. The fish age was determined by counting growth rings from thin sections of the vertebral centra of 414 fish ranging 24-110 cm (203 males) and 24-115 cm (211 females) total length. Estudios sobre la edad y crecimiento de la Palma Calamus brachysomus (Lockington) (Pisces: Sparidae) en aguas ecuatorianas OceanDocs

342 specimens of sparid Calamus brachysomus ”Palma”, collected during a demersal trawl survey by the R. V. Tohallí in April and May1983, were examined. The different techniques used to prepare scales and otoliths for ageing are described and analysed. The otoliths were determined to be the most reliable for ageing studies; 87% of otoliths were readable. The rings observed were assumed to be annual. The mean lengths at age were used to determine the parameters of the Von Bertalanffy growth formula, giving: Lt=50.13(1-e-0.1473(t+2.0704)). The growth curve obtained must be considered provisional due to possible biases in the interpretation of the otoliths, and also due to those arising from the selectivity of the fishing gear.

Etude préliminaire de l'âge et de la croissance de l'espadon <Xiphias gladius> des eaux tunisiennes. OceanDocs

Une clé préliminaire âge taille et âge poids est présentée à partir d’un échantillonnage mené sur 212 espadon (Xiphias gladius L.) pêchés le long des côtes tunisiennes entre mars et septembre 2004. les tailles des poissons sont rangées de 60 cm à 173 cm, correspondant à des poids variant de 1,5 kg à 55 kg. L’analyse des coupes de la 2ème épine de la nageoire anale des espadons échantillonnés ont révélé que les âges sont rangés entre 0 et 5 années.

¿Existen variaciones interanuales en el crecimiento larval de anchoíta bonaerense (Engraulis anchoita)? OceanDocs

Se determinaron las tasas de crecimiento de larvas de la anchoíta argentina (Engraulis anchoíta) provenientes de la plataforma bonaerense, contando y midiendo incrementos diarios en sus otolitos sagitta. Las larvas se capturaron en diferentes años y durante diferentes épocas (otoño de 1999; invierno de 2000 y primavera de 2002, 2003 y 2004)a los fines de analizar diferencias interanuales en el crecimiento. Se observó que tanto el crecimiento de las larvas como el del otolito estaban acoplados. Las tasas de crecimiento se calcularon en forma individual (para cada larva) o a partir de modelos largo-edad. Dichos valores no resultaron significativamente distintos entre las primaveras y promediaron 0.44 mm/día. Tampoco hubo diferencias entre las temperaturas...
